Instagram brings in over a billion (yes, with a B!) users every month, all there for visual content alone. You probably find some of your favorite pictures, videos, and creators on Instagram, but it’s also a great place to share the videos you took yourself, or even ones you found elsewhere.
There are several ways to post video content on Instagram, and tons of different types of video for you to share. Here’s a full rundown:
- Posting a video to your profile
- Sharing a video on your story
- Uploading a video to IGTV
- Reposting videos from other sites
Posting a video to your profile
The simplest & most common way to share a video on Instagram is to post it so it appears in your followers’ feeds. Open your Instagram app and tap the “+” button in the middle of the bottom toolbar. Here, you can choose to record a video on the spot, but most likely you want to share a video that you have saved on your phone. Just make sure the “Library” tab is selected at the bottom of the screen and scroll through to find the video you want to post.
You can also share multiple videos in the same post. When you’re choosing the videos you want to use, tap “Select Multiple” and choose up to 10 videos or photos you want to include. If you want to share several videos with different dimensions, the process is a bit more complex, but it’s still easy to do – check out this tutorial for the simplest method.
Sharing a video on your story
Instagram Stories are collections of photos, videos, questions, or polls that remain on your profile and in your followers’ Stories bar for 24 hours after they’re posted. Stories are a good way to communicate with your friends & followers without going to the effort of making a full post.
To add to your story, go to your home feed and tap the button in the top left that says “Your Story.” Here, you can record a story video on the spot or press the camera roll button in the lower left corner to post a video you have saved in your Photos library. Each Story section can be no more than 10 seconds long, but if you want to post a longer video, Instagram automatically splits it up into multiple 10 second segments.
Stories can be pretty simple, but you can still post tons of different types of content: you can add music, make Story Highlights, or use Story Templates to make your IG Stories special.
Uploading a video to IGTV
Instagram also has a full browsing section dedicated to longer-form video content. IGTV gives users a place to look through video content from top IG users and even new organizations. But you can post to IGTV, too! If you want, you can download the separate IGTV app on your phone, but if you want to publish a video to IGTV, you can simply select the IGTV icon at the top of your main feed (it looks like a little TV with a lightning bolt on it).
From your IGTV Explore menu, hit the “+” button in the upper right-hand corner and choose the video you want to upload to IGTV. Press “Next,” and you can make a description, add some hashtags, and even upload a custom thumbnail.
Reposting videos from other sites
You’re not limited to posting only your own video content on Instagram – it’s simple to share any video content you can find with your followers. You can repost content from YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, or TikTok. All you need to do is grab the link to any online video, download it using the Kapwing Studio, and share it from your device.
